Only nine mares have been included in nominations for Saturday’s Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Autumn Carnival’s most exciting mares.
Leading trainer Chris Waller is set to dominate the running of the Group 2 for mares after nominations four of his stable’s stars for the 2016 Millie Fox Stakes including Catkins and Amicus.
Winner of last year’s edition of the Millie Fox Stakes, Catkins has not been seen at the races since fading late for ninth in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day.
Progressing to second in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) following her Millie Fox Stakes triumph, the Dubawi mare returned to winning form in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) before again finishing second in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) during The Championships.
Placing second to Hazard in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) and ending her campaign sixth in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), Catkins resumed in spring for success in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) before placing fourth in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) in her only other start prior to the Myer Classic.
A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2014 edition of the Thousand Guineas (1600m), Amicus resumed in spring for consecutive wins in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) and Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) before failing to fire in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 26th.
Luckless when eleventh in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on October 17th, the daughter of Fastnet Rock returned to the paddock after finishing fifth in the Myer Classic.
Having beaten a strong field to the line in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) first-up this year, Amicus could be saved for a second-up appearance in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday week.
First Seal was unlucky to miss the entire Spring Racing Carnival through injury, but has been included for a return in 2016 Millie Fox Stakes nominations.
First Seal stormed onto the Australian racing scene during the 2014 Spring Carnival; winning each of the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) and finishing second in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) most notably.
Resuming last year for second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), the daughter of Fastnet Rock returned to winning form in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) before finishing second in each of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) and Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).
The 2016 Millie Fox Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
