Bowman Confident in Millie Fox Stakes Success for Consistent Catkins

February 20th, 2015

Talented mare Catkins is currently rated outright favourite in 2015 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) betting markets and rightly so, according to regular jockey Hugh Bowman.

Bowman has been the first point-of-call for trainer Chris Waller for the ride on Catkins since the beginning of 2014, taking to the saddle ten times of a total eleven race starts; missing the only other occasion, the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) through suspension.

Understandably pleased with the daughter of Dubawi’s first-up performance for success in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) a fortnight ago, Bowman told AAP he is confident she will be tough to beat again in the 2015 Millie Fox Stakes.

“I don’t think I’ve ever ridden a mare, a horse, as consistent as Catkins,” Bowman said.

“If she brings her first-up form into this race she’ll be hard to beat.”

Arguably the most talented Australian racehorse currently in work yet to break through for a victory at the highest level, Bowman conceded the task of top-level success with continue to get harder for Catkins as she ages.

“I feel 1200, 1400 (metres) are really her optimum distances but the trouble is, the best races for fillies and mares are 1500, a mile,” Bowman said.

“When she runs into those top class horses over the bigger distances they tend to get the better of her.”

A typically polished performer over 2014, Catkins won both the Breeders’ Classic and Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) first-up; progressing to third in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) before returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m).

While unable to figure when sixth in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) in her autumn swansong, Catkins returned in spring for success in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) before running second in the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) and third in each of the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
