A proven performer over both track and distance, jockey Tim Clark is confident talented mare Avoid Lightning is more than capable of posting first-up success in Saturday’s Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Undoubtedly finding career-best form over her 2014 racing campaign, Avoid Lightning has not been seen at the races since charging home to win the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) on October 18th, in what also figured as her only start during the Spring Racing Carnival.
Thrilled to have retained the ride on the five-year-old for her autumn return on Saturday, Clark told AAP there may be a slight query with the distance first-up, but believes Avoid Lightning has the class to overcome the talented field of eight.
“It probably is a slight query, but I think 1300 at Rosehill will be a bit softer than 1300 at Randwick,” Clark said.
“She’s drawn a soft barrier too, all those little things help.
“She did place over 1400 metres at the end of her prep in Brisbane; that’s probably as far as she wants but for 1300 she’s done a sufficient amount of work.”
Securing ten race wins and a further six minor places over her 23 competitive start career so far, Avoid Lightning returned in 2014 for a credible fifth in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute (1200m); returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) before placing second in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) on April 19th.
Taking out two minor sprint at Randwick in May and early June, Avoid Lightning earned a trip north for the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 21st, and kicked well late to finish third.
